Ex-England and Oxford United coach considering Rotherham job

Published

on

Rotherham have been relegated from League One, where the U’s will compete next season, following a poor campaign in which they finished 23rd in the table.

The Millers have reportedly offered McClaren the role of technical director as they look to bounce back in League Two next season.

The ex-Oxford youth and reserve team coach was most recently manager of the Jamaican national team but resigned 16 months into the role after failing to win automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His most recent job in English football was as an assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The 65-year-old is still apparently keen to return to the game but there is not agreement in place yet with Rotherham.

McClaren was recently a guest of honour at Oxford’s End of Season awards.

Enjoying a 13-year career, the former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest boss ended his playing days with the Yellows, spending three years in Oxford before injuries forced him to retire in 1992.

A move to Rotherham would see McClaren return home to Yorkshire in a role with a wide-ranging scope for him to enjoy in the latter stages of his career.

Oxford United target Onyedinma offered Wycombe contract

Published

on

Wycombe released their retained list this week and confirmed that winger Onyedinma has been offered a new deal by the club.

The 29-year-old is currently in his fourth stint with the Chairboys over the course of his career.

It was previously reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke that Onyedinma had turned down an offer from the Buckinghamshire-based club.

This led to interest in the Nigerian’s signature, with it being reported by the Bucks Free Press, our sister paper, that Oxford and rivals Reading are expected to make moves for Onyedinma if he is to leave the club.

There are links between the U’s and the former Millwall and Luton Town wide man, with Yellows boss Matt Bloomfield having played with Onyedinma during his playing days at Wycombe as well as coached him as Chairboys manager.

Oxford could do with strengthening their wide areas this summer, particularly on the right.

At present, Player of the Year Stan Mills is their only right-sided option and is expected to draw interest from elsewhere after his impressive performances this season.

The close proximity and history between Bloomfield and Onyedinma means a move for the Chairboys star makes sense.

We recently put the Nigerian forward as a recommended signing for the Yellows ahead of their return to League One.

Three key areas Oxford United must strengthen this summer

The U’s confirmed their retained list this week with 10 players leaving the club after their contracts expire.

Matt Bloomfield declared after the regular Championship ended that the Yellows squad is not in need of an overhaul, however, there are areas that need addressing in the summer transfer window.

Centre back

With only two first-team centre backs on the books in Michal Helik and Ciaron Brown, the U’s are in desperate need of depth in this position.

Golding is the only other option but the academy graduate has not played higher than League Two level for a consistent period and was most recently on loan at Southend United in the National League.

Helik and Brown both offer Championship and League One experience and are a strong duo, but Oxford could do with two central defenders (at least) to provide cover and competition at the back.

We recently suggested Cambridge United standout Kelland Watts as someone the U’s should target.

Right wing

The Yellows have four recognised left midfielders in Aidomo Emakhu, Jeon Jin-woo, Siriki Dembele, and Ferdinan, yet only one on the opposite side in Stan Mills.

Decisions must be made on the futures of Dembele and Ferdinan – the former has not featured for United since February 3 and the latter in over a year.

Whilst those on the left could do a job on the right if needed, a natural right midfielder should be an area Oxford look at this summer.

Links to Wycombe Wanderers wide man Fred Onyedinma have appeared in recent days with his future up in the air amidst potential U’s interest.

Striker

Whilst Oxford do have two capable options, fans are not struck with much confidence up front heading into next season.

Mark Harris has a decent record in League One – he scored 15 goals in his last third-tier campaign when the Yellows were promoted – but only netted nine across two Championship seasons with United.

Nik Prelec is the other, assuming O’Donkor will move out on loan or permanently, but he is still somewhat of an unknown quantity after a lack of consistent minutes following his move from Italian side Cagliari.

The Slovenian showed some good signs at times but only managed one goal in 24 Championship games this season.

There is a world where either option hits the ground running, but going into next term with two relatively untrustworthy picks feels too much of a risk.

Bringing in a striker with a more recent proven goal scoring record at the level would be a sensible move by the club.

YouTube and ITV star KSI makes bizarre dig at Oxford United

Published

The YouTube star, whose real name is JJ Olatunji, recently purchased a minority stake and became a minority owner in National League South club and former EFL side Dagenham to become the latest celebrity to gain influence in the English football pyramid.

KSI has ventured into many spheres during his career in entertainment and business, including rap, pop music, boxing, and is also a judge on ITV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.

In an interview with GQ this week, the influencer shed light into his acquiring of the Daggers and proceeded to take an unprompted shot at the U’s.

Naturally, Olatunji looked at Wrexham as a direct comparison with their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Talking to GQ, KSI said: “You could argue Dagenham & Redbridge is going to have more attention than a lot of Championship sides. Think of a random Championship team…”

“Like, Oxford United!”

“I bet more people know about Dagenham & Redbridge than Oxford United.

“For me, I already see Wrexham as a rival. The idea of beating Ryan Reynolds FC. Me versus Ryan Reynolds, face-off.”

Oxford finished 22nd in the second tier this season and were relegated to League One.

Meanwhile, Welsh side Wrexham finished seventh and two points away from the play-off places in their first season in the Championship since 1982.

The Red Dragons had achieved three consecutive promotions before this season, something which KSI will have his sights set in Dagenham.

The Daggers were last in the top four flights of English football in the 2015/16 season in which they suffered relegation out of League Two.

They were since relegated to the National League South in the 2024/25 campaign.

New minority stakeholder KSI, alongside After Party Studios, is set to produce a ‘Welcome to Wrexham’-style docuseries called ‘Race to the Top’ to tell the story of his takeover, it was revealed by Variety.

There a three divisions between Dagenham and the Yellows, whom Olatunji dubbed a ‘random team’.

The last time the two clubs faced each other was when the U’s won 4-0 in League Two in March 2016.

Since then, Oxford have improved by two tiers whilst the Daggers have fallen by two leagues.
