Tennis club announces new facilities for fast-growing sport
North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club has added three permanent, floodlit padel courts to its facilities, welcoming both members and non-members to try the fast-paced sport, which blends elements of tennis and squash and is typically played in doubles.
Christian Petersen, chair of the club, said: “We are always looking for ways to enhance the experience for our members and the local community.
“Padel is a fantastic addition that aligns with our commitment to offering diverse and exciting activities.
“Whether you’re a seasoned tennis player or new to racquet sports, Padel offers something for everyone.

“And now with three courts, we can open it up to even more people.”
Padel is played on an enclosed court about one-third the size of a traditional tennis court, making it accessible for players of all ages and skill levels.
The sport promotes fitness, fun, and camaraderie among players.

In 2019, participation figures stood at just 15,000 but that had soared to 400,000 by 2024, 860,000 at the end of last year and now one million.
There has been a huge proliferation, too, in the number of courts, with players now able to choose from 551 venues across the country, boasting a combined 1,825 courts.
The club’s new padel courts are available for booking through its website at noltc.co.uk.
A pay-and-play option is available, and players who enjoy the sport can convert to membership to access additional benefits.
Members can book padel courts up to 10 days in advance, while non-members can book up to five days ahead.
Membership also includes eligibility for coaching at all levels, exclusive training sessions, and entry into club-organised padel leagues and tournaments.
A spokesman for the club said: “We invite everyone to join us in welcoming Padel to North Oxford.

The club now offers a ‘Padel only’ membership for those who wish to play padel without access to tennis facilities.
North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club, located on Banbury Road since 1981, is considered Oxfordshire’s premier tennis club.
It currently features eight grass courts, six floodlit hard courts, and is now offering padel as the first stage in an ambitious development programme.
A spokesman said: “Our mission is to promote an active and healthy lifestyle choice for people of all ages and abilities through the enjoyment of tennis and Padel as a community activity.”
Those interested in joining the club can contact the membership secretary at noltc.membership@gmail.com or call or text 07930 064135 for more information.
