Oxford pubs packed as fans flood streets after England win

Footage taken in the city in the early hours of Sunday morning show fans with drums shouting and singing to celebrate the Three Lions’ success.

Pubs across Oxfordshire streamed the game which began at 10pm and didn’t finish until the early hours of the following morning.

Henry, assistant manager of the Cowley Retreat, said: “We hit capacity about half an hour before kick off and had a 1 in 1 out queue for essentially the whole duration of the match.

“The demand for the game was really high with the weather and it being the weekend contributing.”

He said he saw a police car with blue lights on outside the pub after the game had finished trying to get down the street, but was pushed back by revellers.

England are set to face Argentina in the next round who knocked out Switzerland in their own quarter-final game.

The men’s team triumphed 2-1 over Norway after extra time in Miami.

Scores of vehicles were heard honking their horns as they joined in with the jubilant atmosphere.

Jude Bellingham scored both goals for England in a hard-fought victory, overcoming high temperatures and humidity to secure their place in the final four.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, who succeeded Sir Gareth Southgate, said: “It’s intense.

“I don’t want to be anywhere else in the world in these minutes.

“And in this very moment, nowhere else in the whole wide world.

“I enjoy it a lot but having a knockout match every three, four days is, yeah, a new level of demand and a new level of emotional roller coaster”.

Tuchel confirmed that the team flew straight back to Kansas City after the match to begin recovery and preparations.

He said the focus now is on rest and recovery.

He said: “The level of training will go down of course.

“Now it is just about recovery.

“Everyone is ready to attack the last eight days of the tournament.”

England will face Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

England fan Chaudhary Atheq Ahmed said it was nice to see “everyone from every faith, colour and background come together good to see the love and positivity among the community.”

Richard Chubb who DJ’d for an Oxford pub throughout the game said it was the best night he has ever DJ’d in his life stating the atmosphere was “electric”.

In response to revellers blocking the Stagecoach N1 bus to Blackbird Leys a spokesperson fro Stagecoach said: ““We are aware of an incident with one of our buses and a group of revellers.

“We continue to work closely with relevant authorities to support safe and reliable transport operations during the World Cup.”
