Millwall suffer injury doubts before Oxford United bout

Published

Alex Neil’s side are hoping to secure a top-two finish on the final day of the season, with The Lions needing to win and hope that Ipswich Town, who are one point ahead with a superior goal difference, drop points at home to Queens Park Rangers.

Oxford, on the other hand, have nothing to play after relegation was confirmed before their last home game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday last time out.

The U’s put on a show at the Kassam and ran out 4-1 winners thanks to two goals from Tottenham Hotspur loanee Will Lankshear and strikes from Will Vaulks and Myles Peart-Harris.

Millwall struggled to a 1-1 draw with already-relegated Leicester City most recently, a 91st-minute equaliser from Macauley Langstaff rescuing a point away from home.

Striker Josh Coburn was forced off early against The Foxes whilst centre back Caleb Taylor has been missing since picking up a foot injury in his side’s win over Stoke City the game prior.

According to the Southwark News, Coburn’s availability against Oxford remains unclear.

“He’s doing okay,” Lions boss Neil told NewsAtDen.

“He landed awkwardly, so I don’t think that the gash is the biggest issue. We’ll see how he develops this week, and then we’ll make decisions.”

Taylor has been in a walking boot, which is precautionary according to the Southwark News, and a decision on him will also be made closer to Saturday.

Despite the two possible setbacks, Neil does hope to have some returning faces in the fold for the final day.

“We’re going to have a few players back for this weekend.

“What the game time or involvement will look like is unclear at the moment, but I expect to have a couple of lads back in the squad.”

Midfielder Billy Mitchell and full back Alfie Doughty have both been out since March and April.

Sykes was one of three players – alongside Harry Cornick and Sam Morsy – to be released by the Robins last week after the appointment of new head coach Michael Skubala from newly-promoted Lincoln City.

The former Yellow left the club for the red side of Bristol in 2022 after making 136 appearances in OX4 during a three-year stint.

Sykes scored 11 times for Oxford and managed 21 assists, including the consolation goal in the U’s 2-1 League One play-off final defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in 2020.

He arrived at the Kassam in 2019 from semi-professional Northern Irish club Glenavon.

The Republic of Ireland international went on to make 153 appearances for Bristol City, scoring 18 goals.

The 28-year-old has been linked with Championship sides Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic but his next destination is still yet to be confirmed.

Sykes enjoyed his best season for Oxford back in 2021/22, before his move to Ashton Gate, scoring eight goals and bagging five assists, proving the club right in renewing his contract the year prior.

Taking to social media, the Belfast-born man said upon leaving the Robins: “[There are] a lot of moments that will stay with me forever. A place that really felt like home. Thank you to all who played a part in making it feel that way. It’s been a pleasure! Syksey.”

After being one of 10 players to leave the Yellows last month upon the expiry of his contract, Johnson returns to Maidenhead permanently having previously made 22 appearances for the club.

The Magpies reached the play-offs in the sixth tier last season, finishing seventh, but were defeated 2-0 by Dorking Wanderers in the quarter-finals.

Upon joining the Berkshire club, Johnson said: “When I came here, I got the opportunity to play, and it gave me a chance to show my quality and ability. It was good when I was here, so it felt like it was a good opportunity to come back.

“Just getting to play again, really. Playing against the teams at this level and just getting more minutes in. Then, also getting to meet the new guys and the old ones I’ve already seen, and get used to them being my teammates.”

The U’s finished fourth in the National League South in the 2025/26 season behind champions Watford, Plymouth Argyle and AFC Bournemouth.

Liam Gilbert oversaw an upturn in form with Oxford since being reappointed as head coach in November.

Peterborough won promotion from the National League Division One Midlands – the fourth tier – last season, winning the league with an eight-point margin.

The Posh will travel to the MGroup Stadium, the home of Oxford City, for the pre-season clash.

The fixture will take place on Wednesday, June 15 with kick-off scheduled for 7:30PM.

The U’s announced that four players had left the club at the end of last season in Holly Turner, Lucy Trinder, Maddison Millington-Stanbury and Maya Kendell.

Having retained a strong core of players, the Gilbert’s side added a star signing earlier this month with the addition of Sophie Quirk from rivals Bournemouth.

The 24-year-old scored a staggering 29 goals in 33 games for the Cherries last term and will add a new attacking threat to United who are keen to seriously compete for promotion next season.

Quirk said upon her arrival: “There is so much ambition in the Club and everyone has been so welcoming to me which makes me look forward.”
