The Jericho Tavern, where Radiohead played their first gig in 1986, under their original name On A Friday, and Supergrass first performed in 1994, will have a makeover if plans are approved.

Proposals submitted to Oxford City Council would see the exterior of the pub painted duck-egg blue with new signs and lanterns installed.

The tavern and music venue on Walton Street was last refurbished just under a decade ago, with a new menu launched at that time.

Images and memorabilia from some of the pubs’ gigs from the 90s are included in an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Oxford, which will delve into the “pivotal moments in the city’s musical journey” and “vibrant grassroots music scene”.

In 2012, Supergrass were honoured with a plaque at the pub from the Performing Rights Society.

This memorialises a performance by the band in the mid-1990s when a promoter came rushing into the dressing room after a gig and, referring to a record contract with Parlophone, said: “You’ve got it.”

Other acts to play at The Jericho include Stornoway, Mumford and Sons, Bastille, Lianne La Havas and Foals.

The pub was bought out in the 1990s by the Firkin chain and was restored to a music venue in 2005.

It is now owned by Mitchells & Butlers.
