Headington School club delivers remarkable display at Henley Regatta
Headington School Boat Club delivered a remarkable performance at Henley Royal Regatta, successfully defending the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy.
In addition, the club qualified more boat crews for the international competition than ever before, with more girls’ teams than any other school or club this year.
This marks another highlight in what has already been a standout season for the club.

Ryan Demaine, head rowing coach, said: “This achievement speaks volumes about the depth of the programme.
“While trophies naturally attract the headlines, qualifying multiple crews at Henley Royal Regatta demonstrates something equally important: a commitment to developing the entire senior squad.

“Every athlete is challenged to pursue excellence, creating an environment where standards continue to rise across the whole programme rather than within a single crew.”
Both Headington’s first and second quadruple girls’ sculls progressed through qualifications into the main event.
Competition began on Tuesday, June 30, with the first quad securing a decisive win over local rivals Shiplake College.
The second quad did not advance and later in the week the premier team would be knocked out against Marlow Rowing Club.
On Wednesday, the first VIII defeated Henley Rowing Club by four lengths in a record-breaking display which was followed by a win against Deerfield Academy (USA) on Friday.

They then secured a place in the semi-finals with a two and three-quarter length victory.
In the semi-final, Headington faced off against RowAmerica Rye, who have been undefeated since 2024 but were beaten by the Headington team by two lengths.
This set the stage for Sunday’s final against Shiplake College.
In the final, Headington’s first VIII raced with composure and determination against Shiplake College to retain the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy.
In the process, they set a new course record, lowering the previous best time by approximately four seconds.

Mr Demaine said: “Henley Royal Regatta represents the pinnacle of the rowing season.
“Success is measured not only by medals and trophies, but by the ability to perform under immense pressure on the sport’s biggest stage.
“Throughout the week, our rowers have done what they do best. They have had fun, looked after each other, and made boats go fast by rowing superbly.”

The club, which runs a comprehensive development programme throughout the school, said that many athletes have progressed through the ranks over several years.
Mr Demaine said: “This season will rightly be remembered as one of the most successful in the club’s history.
“Congratulations to every athlete, coach, parent and supporter who played a part in another unforgettable Henley campaign.”
