A group of 42 students from Aureus School in Didcot travelled to Wembley Stadium on April 14 to watch England take on Spain in a Women’s International World Cup qualifier.

They witnessed a dramatic 1-0 victory that took the Lionesses closer to securing a place at next year’s FIFA World Cup.

Andrew Tristram, head of science at Aureus School, which is part of the GLF Schools multi-academy trust, said: “England roared to a thrilling victory over Spain in the qualifier, producing a night of drama and passion.

“The Lionesses pressed relentlessly, battling every challenge with fearless intensity.

“Spain threatened with slick attacking play of their own, but England’s defence stood firm.”

The winning goal was scored by Lauren Hemp.

Mr Tristram added: “The breakthrough sparked wild celebrations when Lauren Hemp fired home the decisive winner, finishing a sweeping move with clinical precision.

“All 42 students went home happy.”

The match was especially memorable as it marked Kiera Walsh’s 100th cap.
