Wallingford mayor wishes ‘Betty’ happy 100th birthday
On Monday, March 16, Wallingford mayor Ros Lester visited Westgate House Care Home to celebrate the centenary of Alice Betty Peet, known to everyone as ‘Betty’.
Ms Lester said: “It was a privilege to visit Betty and share in such a joyful occasion, recognising both her long life and her connections to the local area.”
Betty was surrounded by friends and family for a lively birthday party and received a congratulatory card from Their Majesties, The King and Queen.
She spent much of her life in Sonning Common. Betty’s parents ran the Bird in Hand pub and she attended Henley Grammar School after earning a scholarship.
She lived independently until the age of 96 and never married.
Her two nieces, who were present at the celebration, are her closest surviving relatives.
The mayor’s visit formed part of her civic duties, which include recognising significant milestones in the community.
Wallingford Town Council is the parish authority for the town, serving a population of around 11,600.
The council is responsible for maintaining public gardens, managing allotments, supporting the well-being of residents, and it works in partnership with both the district and county councils to deliver many services.
