Village pub in top 20 nation favourites for weekend stroll

The list has been created by David Hancock, Sawday’s chief pub inspector, who has revealed his pick of Britain’s best destinations for weekends filled with hiking and food.

The list compiled on behalf of travel company Sawday’s has been highlighted by The i Paper.

The Greyhound Inn in Letcombe Regis has been picked by Mr Hancock as it is close to popular walking route The Ridgeway, an 87-mile national trail.

He writes: “Grab a map from the bar and you’re straight on to the Ridgeway – Britain’s oldest road, and one of its finest walks.

“The chalk downlands roll away towards Uffington’s White Horse and Wayland’s Smithy, with big skies and very little noise.

“This 18th-century village pub does everything right: eight stylish bedrooms, beamed ceilings, wonky floors and a kitchen that takes seasonal ingredients seriously.

“A proper local, not trying too hard, in exactly the right place. Rooms for two from £115 a night.”

The pub said in a statement: “Everyone is very welcome at The Greyhound Inn, an 18th century free house, in the centre of Letcombe Regis, a pretty downland village within the Vale of the White Horse region of Oxfordshire.

“Whatever you are looking for from your visit to The Greyhound Inn you can be sure that we are dedicated to ensuring you can relax and have a really good time.”

The pub has a 4.7 out of five rating on customer reviews site Tripadvisor.

After visiting earlier this month one customer posted: “My mum and I popped in on the off chance as we were passing by.

“I telephoned first from the car park just to inquire whether they had availability as it was around 2.30pm.

“They said ‘yes that was fine, just come in’. We were greeted warmly and promptly shown to our table.

“The bar staff were friendly and attentive.

“We had the heritage tomatoes and basil side salad and home-made bread with marmalade butter or curry butter, which we weren’t sure about at first but it was delicious. We also had a side order of Parmesan and truffle fries to share The food arrived promptly.

“It was perfectly cooked so tasty we had a small glass of Pinot Noir each and water on the table which was £62.

“I was more than happy to pay that and gave a tip because the service and food was so good. Will definitely be back with the family at some point.”
