Big Bale Play at High Lodge Farm in Culham has welcomed youngsters to its giant maze of more than 250 straw bales for scrambling, jumping and climbing on.

Sisters Emily, Katy, Lucy and Jess, who run the farm, were inspired to create the springtime event by their own upbringing on their family farm in Blewbury.

Lucy Outen-Allen, 39, who created the bale maze over 10 hours last week, said: “We used to love playing on straw bales as children and have such fond memories of long summer evenings spent climbing, jumping and chasing each other around them.

“There’s just something about straw bales that children are naturally drawn to.

“They spark imagination, adventure and freedom to play. We wanted to recreate that simple outdoor fun for families to enjoy together.

“It’s the perfect summer playground and enormous fun for all ages.”

The sisters set up the popular playground for the first time four years ago, using a JCB to arrange the straw bales which will be kept on the farm or sold onto farmers once guests have had their fun.

Ms Outen-Allen added: “Although it’s been incredibly hot this week, it certainly hasn’t stopped families coming out to play at High Lodge Farm.

“In many ways, the warm weather has added to the atmosphere, children have loved the freedom of being outdoors, climbing, exploring and enjoying simple summer fun in the fresh air.

“We’ve made sure there are shaded areas, seating and refreshments available, and it’s been wonderful seeing families making the most of the long sunny days together.”
