Son of former Oxford United footballer found dead in UAE

According to the Daily Mail, the bodies of Cassius Newton, 34, of Poole in Dorset, and Aran Martinson, 33 from Essex, were discovered on July 18.

This was by rescuers in the mountainous region of Wadi Naqab in the United Arab Emirates.

The inquests into the two men’s deaths opened last month, with both men living in the Middle East country when they died.

Mr Newton was the son of noted footballer Eddie Newton who played for Chelsea FC between 1990 and 1999.

After leaving the club, he had short spells for a number of other teams including Oxford United where the defensive midfielder played seven times.

He retired in 2001, in part due to a recurring knee injury, and since then has pursued a career in management including being the assistant manager at Chelsea and the manager of Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The Daily Mail reported that his son, Cassius Newton, and Mr Martinson had gone on a hike together through a desert valley, with temperatures likely to have gone above 40C.

At the inquest openings in Chelmsford, the provisional medical cause of death for both men was recorded as cardiac and respiratory arrest.

On Mr Martin’s LinkedIn, his wife shared a link to the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, which she said was “dear” to her husband.

She added: “For those of you who worked with Aran, I hope you’ll remember him not just for what he did, but for the person he was — funny, kind, loyal, determined and someone who could make people laugh wherever he went.”
