Runner take on ‘friendly and flat’ White Horse Half Marathon

The popular race, celebrating its 41st year, took place on a scenic route through the Vale of the White Horse, starting and finishing in Grove.

Runners weaved through the picturesque villages of Denchworth, Lyford, and Charney Bassett on the unchanged course, known for its personal best potential.

This year, the event saw a sell-out with more than 500 participants, supported by a team of around 80 marshals.

Runners ranged in age from late teens to over 80 years old, with participants enjoying the support and safety provided by dedicated volunteers.

The race headquarters was set up at St John’s Primary School in Grove, with volunteers ensuring the smooth running of the event, marking the course, providing refreshments, and offering much-needed water to participants along the way.

The White Horse Harriers Athletics Club, who organise the event, also expressed gratitude to various local contributors, including TFD Gym Health and Fitness, Olivia Pile for the mug design, Jimmy Blackshaw for spot prizes, and Hendred Vineyard for donating bottles of their sparkling Hendred Brut.

With the race now completed, the organising team is already preparing for their next big summer event, the Uffington White Horse Gallop, set to take place on Sunday, July 26.

This challenging off-road half-marathon follows the hills and trails around the Ridgeway above Wantage, offering spectacular views of the Vale of the White Horse.
