The car that The People’s Princess stepped out of while wearing her iconic ‘revenge dress’ is up for sale without a guide price.

The late royal emerged from the Jaguar XJ40 wearing a black off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian gown in 1994, days after then Prince Charles admitted he had been unfaithful.

The daring dress instantly made headlines around the world, with many interpreting that it was worn ‘in revenge’ for Charles’ affair.

The four-litre Jag is now being auctioned off by The Market, based in Abingdon.

And the auctioneers said is it being listed without a guide price because they “really don’t know how to put a price on the car that was at the centre of such an iconic cultural moment in time”.

The car is said to be in good condition, with 45,000 miles on the clock, a few minor scuffs on the wheel, and a number of small shallow dinks.

There are three filled-in holes in the roof just above the centre of the windscreen which were where a bracket for mounting the Royal Standard was fitted.

With the royal fleet as the car’s one and only former keeper, the vendor bought the car in February 1997, just six months before Diana’s tragic death in Paris.

He kept the car warm and dry in a heated garage ever since, adding very few miles – proven by the fact that the mileage in 2006 was 38,000.

The car comes with all of its original book pack, including a service book that contains exclusively main dealer stamps up until the last entry in 2014.

The current MoT certificate is valid until October 26, 2026.

Among many other photographed instances, there are images of Diana arriving in the car at the Royal School for the Blind in Leatherhead in 1995, and of her arriving at Brown’s Hotel in 1996.

An online auction for the car begins on June 1 and will last for seven days.

A spokesperson for The Market said: “On June 29, 1994, the most famous woman in the world stepped out of a car in a jaw-dropping dress designed to make a punchy and unmistakably defiant statement in front of the world’s media.

“She wore it knowing that the eyes of the world’s media would be upon her like never before, thanks to Charles’ admission of infidelity broadcast just hours earlier.

“And, in a blizzard of firing shutters and flashguns, the world’s media captured the scene as she emerged from this very car to create a unique and enduring imprint on history.

“We really don’t know how to put a price on the car that was at the centre of such an iconic cultural moment in time.”
