Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor’s links to Oxford shared
Presented by film studies lecturer Graham Rinaldi, the talk will delve into Burton’s time studying at Exeter College, his role as Angelo in Measure for Measure, and his 1966 return to the Oxford Playhouse for Doctor Faustus.
This production notably marked Elizabeth Taylor’s stage debut as Helen of Troy.
The event will also highlight the building of the Burton Taylor Studio.
The lecture, titled Dear Curious Minds, will take place at Florence Park Community Centre on Wednesday, June 10, at 7.30pm, with voluntary donations being split between the UPP and Florence Park Social Club.
Richard Burton’s association with Oxford began in 1944 when he studied English Literature and Italian at Exeter College.
He returned in 1966 to fulfil a promise to his director, Nevill Coghill, to act alongside students of the Oxford University Dramatic Society in Doctor Faustus.
