Residents evacuated as fire crews race to Oxford tower block

A number of people were removed from their homes after a fire at Windrush Tower in Blackbird Leys yesterday evening (Saturday, March 21).

A member of the public – who wished to remain anonymous – reported at around 11pm that there were two fire brigade vehicles present and he saw one officer heading inside, with more likely already in the building.

Following the presence of the fire engines, Oxford City Council put out a statement online, explaining that it was a “small fire” which was quickly contained.

They added that the sprinkler system was activated and that no-one was injured.

A spokesperson for Oxford City Council said: “A small fire occurred in a flat at Windrush Tower, Oxford, earlier this evening.

“The fire was quickly contained to the flat after the building’s sprinkler system activated. No one was injured.

“Residents have now been allowed back into their homes.

“We would like to thank Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and colleagues at the city council and ODS for their response, and our residents for their patience and forbearance.”

Thames Valley Police has since confirmed the incident is non-suspicious with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue having been approached for comment.
