Last October, in an operation called October Op Purchase, the force recorded 406 incidents of theft from shops in Oxfordshire, with 142 positive outcomes, representing a 35 per cent positive outcome rate.

A positive outcome means formal action was taken, such as a charge, caution, or community resolution.

During the same period, 49 individuals were arrested for shoplifting, said the police.
