Premium Cotswolds pub still up for £550K sale after closure

The Black Horse in Salford near Chipping Norton was put up for sale in early February this year for £550,000 and, almost six months on, it remains unsold.

Previously it was set to be sold at auction by Bond Wolfe in October 2025 but was withdrawn before the bidding could take place.

Then WTS Property Consultants put it on the market for offers in excess of £550,000.

Along with the pub, the property comes with living accommodation, a detached cottage and attractive landscape gardens.

Its history goes back to the 1800s and it was named last year on The Cotswold Gentleman’s list of the 50 best pubs in the region.

Other west Oxfordshire establishments mentioned included Jeremy Clarkson’s boozer The Farmer’s Dog in Asthall and Chipping Norton’s The Kings Arms.

The pub is now closed but was operating in the summer of 2025 with customer reviews website Tripadvisor showcasing several five star reviews and its Facebook page advertising events in August.

In its review of the pub, The Cotswold Gentleman said: “After reopening its doors in 2023, this brilliant little pub (younger sister of The Chequers at Churchill) is one of our favourites in the Cotswolds.

“The short menu is very grill focused with some awesome meats, ribs, rotisserie chicken and cracking sides and sauces.

“The size of the pub lends itself to a brilliant and relaxed atmosphere and we urge you all to go and try it.”

The pub also offered overnight accommodation at its one-bedroom Salford Cottage suites, which were marketed on Airbnb.

The Lionhearth Group was behind the reopening of the pub in 2023 with managing director Scott Macdonald stating they had given the property “a new lease of life”.

Owned by billionaire businessman Sir Anthony Gallagher, the Lionhearth Group operates The Swan in Chipping Norton and The Chequers in Churchill.

Anderson Orr Architects was involved in the refurbishment of The Black Horse and not only said it dates back to the 1800s but that it had fallen into disrepair prior to its refurbishment.

Lionhearth has since removed its page relating to the Salford pub and appears to no longer be connected to the business.

On Companies House, a business called The Black Horse Salford Limited ran from September 2024 to September 2025, after which it was taken over by dormant company 8 Carlos Place Trading Limited.

The pub’s total gross internal area is circa 1,977 square feet and it sits on a plot size amounting to around 0.181 of an acre.

It is available as freehold and has a premises licence.
