Police warn after rogue traders scam pensioner of £3,500

The pensioner from Milton-under-Wychwood was approached at their home by a group of men claiming they had been carrying out nearby jobs and offering to complete some gardening work.

After agreeing, the traders spent around 90 minutes cutting trees but left behind significant mess and unfinished work.

They told the resident they would return the following day to clear up, but never came back. Instead, they demanded payment of £3,500 for the work already carried out, leaving the victim facing a substantial and unexpected bill.

Police say the incident highlights a wider issue, with rogue traders becoming more active during the summer months when longer days and better weather lead to increased outdoor work.

Offenders often use cold-calling tactics to pressure homeowners into quick decisions.

Residents are being urged to remain cautious. Officers advise never agreeing to work from unexpected callers, always seeking multiple quotes, and checking credentials before hiring anyone.

People are also encouraged to use trusted services such as the Trading Standards-approved “Buy With Confidence” scheme, which lists vetted and reliable traders.

Anyone who feels pressured or suspects fraudulent activity should refuse the service and seek advice from a trusted person or contact police if necessary.
