Police update after man ‘bloodied’ in Oxford gang fight

The force has revealed that no arrests have been made and that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing, almost two months after it occurred.

The morning after the night-time clash on Sunday, June 21, an eyewitness described how he saw between six and eight men with “weapons” with the groups dispersing when he started shouting at them.

One man was left behind and was “screeching” with Thames Valley Police subsequently confirming he had been rushed to hospital where his condition was not deemed life-threatening.

The eyewitness, a 50-year-old resident who did not wish to be named, explained how he heard noises including a “thud” and “screams” from down the road.

Trained in martial arts, he stepped out and saw two groups of guys.

“This was around midnight,” he said, “all of them were wearing masks”.

The man, along with others, said the groups had weapons with eyewitness reports stating that a car and knives were involved, with an electric bike also spotted.

He said: “A lot of them broke off when they saw me coming out. I was shouting and yelling.”

He added: “The police and ambulance came about 10 minutes after I called them. I showed them what was going on.”

A spokesperson for the police said at the time: “Officers were made aware of a report of an assault at around 11.50pm yesterday (June 21) at the junction of Ridgefield Road and Leys Place, Oxford.

“A man in his 20s sustained major, but not life-threatening, injuries and is still in hospital receiving treatment.

The eyewitness said the injured man was “bloodied” and was “shouting and screaming in pain” as the ambulance took him away.

He said: “People are pretty distressed and upset about it. It is not healthy at all; it is really bad it is in Oxford at all.”

At least emergency six vehicles were at the crime scene, which included a cordon on Ridgefield Road that was in place until 1.40pm on Monday, June 22.

In addition an armed police unit was reportedly seen as well as a forensics team.

A number of local people explained they were shocked by the police presence and that it was highly unusual for the area.

Another eyewitness to the incident called it “crazy”.

She added: “We have never seen anything like this before.  We were in shock for most of the night.”
