Peacock killed by car after being Cotswolds farm drop off

The striking peafowl bird was dropped off at the Chipping Norton farm without any prior contact, information or arrangement.

Staff believe it was dropped off to be rehomed, but before it could settle or was even discovered, it escaped onto the road and was struck by a vehicle, resulting in its death.

A spokesman at the farm said: “This is a heartbreaking outcome that could have been avoided.

“We understand that circumstances sometimes mean people need to find new homes for animals, and whenever possible we are happy to help or offer advice.

“If we are unable to assist directly, we will do our best to point you towards an organisation or individual who can.

“However, please do not leave animals at our site without contacting us first.

“Dumping animals puts them at serious risk and prevents us from providing the care and safety they deserve.

“If you need help rehoming an animal, please get in touch with us. Together we can find a safe and responsible solution.

“Thank you for your understanding and support.”

It is perfectly legal to own peacocks in the UK, but, because they are very loud, large and prone to wandering, they are better suited for rural country houses with large gardens rather than residential estates.
