Oxfordshire residents asked to vote for favourite butterfly
The public poll is part of Butterfly Conservation’s search for Britain’s Favourite Butterfly, and closes on Sunday, June 7.
Leading the vote in Oxfordshire is the peacock butterfly, known for its bold eyespots and widespread presence in gardens across the UK.
Kate Merry, head of engagement at Butterfly Conservation, said: “The response to Britain’s Favourite Butterfly has been absolutely wonderful and we’re not surprised.
“It’s clear that people across Oxfordshire have incredibly strong feelings about the butterflies they love.
“What’s so exciting right now is just how close the vote is.
“Any one of these species could take the title, and with voting still open, the final result really is in the hands of the public.
“Whether your heart belongs to a garden favourite or a rare and special species, please cast your vote, every single one counts and your butterfly needs you.”
The holly blue and brimstone butterflies are currently in second and third place in Oxfordshire.
Butterfly Conservation hopes the campaign will inspire people to reconnect with nature and take action to protect it.
The UK is home to 60 butterfly species, but 80 per cent have declined in the past 50 years due to habitat loss, land use changes, and climate change.
The campaign’s website includes information about all 60 species and a ‘what’s your butterfly personality?’ quiz.
Voting is open until Sunday, June 7 at britainsfavouritebutterfly.co.uk.
