Oxford United’s challenging 2026/27 League One season predicted

The U’s face a potential uphill battle this season with a temporary transfer embargo restricted them from signing any new players until January.

Aaron Ramsey’s side has talent but must navigate the issue of low squad depth during the first half of the campaign.

Implementing a new style of play, the former Arsenal hero and new Yellows head coach must get a limited squad winning matches to the club into the winter in a stable position.

Expectations have shifted with the introduction of the transfer ban, but there is certainly potential for Oxford to impress on the pitch.

Ahead of the first league fixture of the season, we have predicted how United’s season might pan out…

League finish – 8th

Honestly, it would not surprise us if United finished anywhere from third to 20th.

But we will lean towards the positive side.

Ramsey clearly has good ideas and a clear identity and if they U’s can build on that and manage the squad sensibly until January then there is no reason why they cannot push higher up the table from then onwards.

We predict a lower-midtable position at the midway point and a late play-off push with a bit of end-of-season drama, their rivals’ head start just leaving the Yellows short.

Top goal scorer – Stan Mills

His U’s future may be up in the air, but Mills is an Oxford player.

This season is a perfect opportunity for the 22-year-old to up his output.

He is widely considered a Championship-level winger and has an eye for goal but is yet to score more than three goals in a season.

In a weaker league, this is the perfect time to do so.

Player of the Season – Tyler Goodrham

Goodrham will remind everyone just how good he is this season.

He has been at the heart of most of the impressive attacking moves in pre-season and is a clever attacking midfielder with an eye for goal.

Under Ramsey, the 23-year-old will be key.

Young Player of the Season – Harrison Bradney

One of a few young players to impress in the summer, Bradney has been impactful next to captain Cameron Brannagan at times.

We can see the youngster taking his chance when given opportunities this season.

Breakout star – Jamie McDonnell

The Northern Irishman quietly had a solid game against Leyton Orient last week.

He shone for Mansfield Town in his six months in League One last season, the 22-year-old’s ball-winning abilities standing out.

Under Ramsey, his passing has got better and will improve further, and we are tipping him to be a key cog in this Yellows team alongside Brannagan in midfield.
