Oxford United hit with judicial review claim over new stadium

The U’s had signed the Section 106 Planning Agreement with Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council for their new stadium in February.

This agreement enabled full and final planning permission for the EFL Championship club’s new stadium, which will be located on a 17-acre site known as “the Triangle” just south of the Kidlington roundabout in Oxfordshire, to be issued.

The news represents one of the most significant milestones to date in Oxford United’s plans to build a 16,000-capacity stadium, said the club four months ago.

These plans also include a 180-bedroom hotel, restaurant, conference centre, health and wellbeing space and a gym as well as a community plaza.

FOSB has consistently opposed the plans throughout the process and, in April, took the complaints to the High Court by attempting to launch a judicial review.

United today (June 6) confirmed that it had been formally hit with a claim.

The club said in a statement: “The club filed its Acknowledgement of Service and Summary Grounds of Resistance with the Court on June 3, 2026. This responds to the claim in detail and also requests that the case be expedited by the High Court given the harm further delays and uncertainty could cause. Our request to expedite the claim has been supported by Cherwell District Council and, if granted, would hopefully see a hearing scheduled at some point during the summer.

The club continued: “We are confident that the planning application was robust and considered thoroughly by Cherwell District Council and the club will fully support the Council in defending their decision to grant planning permission.”

The U’s went on to state that updates will be provided in due course.
