Oxford United club stalwart to retire after 44 years

Mick Brown, who has been a lifelong supporter of Oxford United, will step down at the end of this season as assistant club secretary, concluding a remarkable career that began in 1977 when he founded the London Road Club to organise coach travel for away games.

From there, he officially joined the club in 1982 and went on to become a key figure at the Manor Ground during Oxford United’s rise through the divisions and its Milk Cup triumph.

Tim Williams, chief executive officer of Oxford United, said: “Mick’s contribution to Oxford United simply cannot be overstated.

“For more than four decades, he has been the embodiment of dedication, professionalism, and loyalty to this Football Club.

“Through the highs and the lows, Mick has always been there, working tirelessly behind the scenes with the Club’s best interests at heart.”

Mr Brown has taken on nearly every role at the club, from running the ticket office to editing the matchday programme.

He served as club secretary from 1989 until moving into the assistant club secretary role in 2023.

Mr Williams added: “His knowledge, experience, and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact on everyone who has had the pleasure of working alongside him.

“On behalf of the Board, staff, players, and supporters, I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Mick for everything he has given to Oxford United.

“He will always be part of the Oxford United family, and we look forward to welcoming him back to the stadium in the years to come as a supporter.”

Even during the club’s financial struggles in the 1990s, Mr Brown remained a key part of the team that helped stabilise Oxford United during a period of great uncertainty.

Former director and lifelong friend Nick Harris said: “It all started with Mick the supporter organising the London Road away travel.

“He then learnt his trade under the stewardship of the legendary Jim Hunt.

“When the times got tough Mick was always there, the man behind the scenes keeping the ship afloat.

“In those distressing times with a half-built stadium and administration on the horizon, Mick never faltered despite not being paid.

“Yellow blood flows through his veins. Every football club, however big or small, needs a Mick Brown.

“Oxford United were the lucky ones.”

Oxford United extended its sincere thanks to Mr Brown for his outstanding service and wished him all the best in his retirement.
