Oxford Hoops to host charity game for Colombian shelter

Oxford Hoops Basketball Club is raising funds to repair and rebuild a children’s shelter in Pereira, Colombia.

The Fundación Nuestro Hogar was severely damaged during a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia.

Franky Marulanda, head coach and founder of Oxford Hoops, said: “On Monday, a devastating earthquake struck western Colombia.

“For many families, life changed in a matter of seconds.”

He explained that the shelter has cared for vulnerable girls for 40 years, from babies as young as two months to teenagers of 15.

Mr Marulanda said: “This is more than a building. It is their home.

“It is the place where frightened children have learnt to feel safe again.

“It is where they sleep, study, play, laugh and begin to believe that their future can be different from their past.”

The earthquake caused part of the roof to collapse, left the building without electricity or running water, and forced the evacuation of all the girls to an emergency site.

Oxford Hoops is organising fundraising games and Zumba sessions to support the rebuilding effort.

The first basketball game for the cause will be held at 6pm on Saturday, September 5, with Oxford Hoops Men playing the Solent Kestrels.

Mr Marulanda confirmed that more events are being planned urgently.

He said support is critical as the girls cannot remain long-term in an emergency shelter.
