Oxford Covered Market shop teases new Cotswolds venture

The Oxford Cheese Company has said it is setting up a new venture at Groves Yard, in Milton-under-Wychwood in a historic artisan yard offering a variety of independent shops, cafes, and community services.

Robert Pouget said: “Relaxing over a pint at the Hare at Milton-under-Wychwood, after a technical set back at our new venture in Groves Yard.

“The awning was delivered a couple of feet short in width!

“They’re very lucky we’re not naming the company or the individual who managed to measure the space allocated inaccurately to such an extent. 

“We’re very excited about the project and will be posting the concept and progress soon.”

Robert Pouget founded the Oxford Cheese Company in Oxford’s Covered Market more than 40 years ago.

Earlier this year he slammed the lack of compensation or apology from Oxfordshire County Council, which owns and runs the market, after being forced to close for a week by city council works.

The Oxford Cheese Company in the Covered Market had to close in January and could only open for a few hours due to noise, dust and drilling vibrations from the works to the Covered Market entrance of avenue one.

Posting on Instagram at the time, the founder wrote: “Rain water was not draining away so the pavement had to be dug up and re-laid.

“Unfortunately and rather comically when they had finished they found the market gates would not close. So they had to start again.

“Not a word from the council for this cock-up, no apologies or offers of compensation for loss of business at a time when we’re all fighting for survival.”
