Nostalgic pictures of Oxfordshire elections over the years
It’s something newspapers, media outfits and reporters have always delighted – capturing the best picture to represent the feeling of the day, the shock new candidate, or the cutest dog at the polling station.

The three candidates for a mock election at Headington School, L to R Larua Colston (Conservative), Caroline Sprinz (Labour) who was the surprise winner, and Ruth Sharpe (Liberal Democrat), 2001 (Image: Oxford Mail archive)

And they are not all to do with local government or Parliament, either – in this gallery, we have archive pictures from school mock elections, university chancellor elections, European parliament elections and more.
There’s even an image of the Abingdon Morris Dancer’s Mayor, who was elected by a landslide vote in 1983.
