Nigella Lawson shares her rogue holiday essentials

In an article for the Financial Times she shared that she avoids hotels for longer breaks, preferring to rent properties with kitchens.

She shared her essential kitchen items for holidays, including an AeroPress, a supply of gourmet coffee, Maldon salt, Colman’s English mustard, and Yorkshire Gold tea bags.

She also packs a mezzaluna, a small Oxo handheld mandoline, and a garlic peeling tube.

Despite the appeal of escaping daily cooking duties, Ms. Lawson enjoys the freedom and creativity of cooking on holiday, even with limited equipment.

She wrote: “While I am perfectly aware that, for many people, one of the chief aims of a summer holiday is to escape from the daily pressure of getting food on the table, I am not among their number.”

Ms. Lawson said she initially finds the unfamiliarity of holiday kitchens a challenge but soon feels “unencumbered and liberated.”

She added: “It may simply be a kitchen case of Stockholm syndrome, but I do think that one of the ways in which we refresh ourselves on holiday is by breaking with our everyday routine.”

Ms. Lawson also discussed the struggle of packing for holidays, admitting she finds it harder to choose clothes than kitchen items.

She said: “For some reason, I find this much harder when it comes to anything not to do with the kitchen: in particular, when I poke about in my wardrobe thinking about what I might wear on holiday, I seem to start believing I’ll turn into an entirely different sort of person, and start shoving in clothes I’ve had for years and never felt tempted to wear at home.

“And then I don’t wear them on holiday, either.”

Ms. Lawson advised against taking ambitious cooking plans on holiday, saying it is more important to leave expectations behind.

There is some anticipation for it as Ms Lawson replaces Prue Leith, who stepped down as a judge at the end of the last series.

The latest season is expected to be shown on Channel 4 in September, although the dates for episodes have not yet been revealed.

The 66-year-old has strong Oxford connections as she was once a student at the Oxford University college Lady Margaret Hall.

Ms Lawson read Modern Languages, edited the student magazine Isis, later saving it from financial trouble, and graduated in 1979.

Paul Hollywood has been a judge since the series first aired on the BBC in 2010, sharing the role with Mary Berry and then Ms Leith.

This will be the 17th series of The Great British Bake Off and it will be presented by Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond.
