NHS issues warning over fake pharmacies and weight loss meds

Fake online pharmacies are reportedly posing serious risks, including selling untested and unsafe medicines, failing to deliver purchased items, and refusing refunds, according to Oxford University Hospitals.

These unlicensed sites may also sell prescription-only medicines without a prescription, potentially endangering health.

Fake weight loss medications containing harmful ingredients, and faulty devices that deliver incorrect doses of medicine are among the products being sold.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPC) registers all pharmacies in Great Britain, including online ones, and they must meet its standards for registered pharmacies.

Consumers are advised to verify a pharmacy’s registration on the GPC website before making a purchase.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) also offers a ‘Yellow Card Scheme’ for reporting issues with medicines or medical devices.

It’s stressed that anyone with health concerns should seek advice from a GP or registered pharmacist.

A correct diagnosis should be obtained, and prescribed medicines should always be sourced from legitimate suppliers.
