Manufacturers urged to join AI and automation scheme

The internships are designed to drive AI, automation, and broader digital transformation by pairing firms with university students through Made Smarter South East, a Government-funded programme offering funded university placements.

So far, 17 placements have been secured across the region, with five completed and 12 either ongoing or in recruitment.

Bryan Vint, programme manager for Made Smarter South East, said: “One of the biggest barriers to digital transformation for many manufacturers is finding the time and specialist expertise needed to turn ideas into reality.

“These digital internships help overcome that challenge by connecting businesses with talented students and graduates who bring new skills, knowledge and fresh thinking into the organisation.

“At the same time, students gain invaluable experience working on real business challenges, applying their learning in a commercial environment and developing the skills employers are looking for.”

The scheme offers practical experience for students while addressing industry skills shortages and supporting businesses in areas such as AI, workflow automation, data analytics, and digital quality management.

Placements are available for businesses in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey, and West Sussex.

Mr Vint said: “We’re encouraging manufacturers across the South East to explore how a Digital Internship could help them unlock projects that might otherwise remain on the drawing board.”

The internships form part of the broader Made Smarter South East programme, which also features digital roadmaps, leadership training, workforce development, and up to £20,000 in match-funded grants to support technology adoption.
