The former Top Gear presenter recalled the encounter as he made a brief visit to the Formula 1 paddock at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix weekend.

Mr Clarkson, a regular at the British Grand Prix and recently involved in promotional work with the Alpine F1 team, said the incident happened after last year’s race when he was trying to leave the circuit.

In a clip shared from this year’s event, he explained his decision to head home before the chequered flag to avoid a repeat of the post‑race queues.

“We’ll shut down now on social media, go home and watch the last 20 laps on TV there, and then we’re not stuck in a traffic jam,” he said.

The 66-year-old then described what had happened 12 months earlier as he added: “Because last year I was stuck in a little tiny room with Max Verstappen for two hours.

“He’s a lovely guy; he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Back to the farm now.”

The comments were made as Mr Clarkson left the paddock at Silverstone, where he had been filmed chatting with team personnel and walking through the garages ahead of Sunday’s race.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion with Red Bull, had crashed out of this year’s British Grand Prix in the closing laps, triggering a safety car that meant the race finished under caution.
