Iconic piece of aviation history returned to UK RAF base

RAF Benson’s iconic Spitfire gate guardian replica is back after undergoing extensive refurbishment.

It was removed on May 12 for a temporary, essential restoration and repainting project.

The aircraft was reinstalled with the help of the Joint Aircraft Recovery & Transportation Squadron.

Personnel at the station expressed gratitude for the efforts of those involved in lifting and securing the historic aircraft back on its pedestal.

A statement for RAF Benson said: “She’s back and looking magnificent.

“After undergoing an extensive refurbishment, our beloved Spitfire gate guardian has been reinstalled at RAF Benson.

“A massive thank you to Joint Aircraft Recovery & Transportation Squadron and the dedicated personnel who managed the lift and secured this iconic piece of aviation history back onto her pedestal.”

RAF Benson, near Wallingford, plays a crucial role in supporting both UK and overseas military operations.

The airbase runs under the Wittering Model, with the Station Commander responsible for all infrastructure and services.

The station’s Air Wing, under the Joint Aviation Command, focuses on operational and training outputs.

As well as military operations, RAF Benson is home to the civilian National Police Air Service and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance, both of which operate 24 hours a day.
