Hollywood pub is now serving Jeremy Clarkson’s beer

The Crown in Wells, Somerset, features heavily in the comedy police drama starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

The historic pub now has a big billboard outside featuring a picture of the TV presenter holding a pint, with the caption below saying “Soup of the day – Hawkstone lager”.

In 2021, Mr Clarkson and the Cotswold Brew Co launched the Hawkstone brand, which now offers a range of premium British lagers, ciders and vodka.

Named after an ancient standing stone in the Cotswolds, the beer was originally made from the barley grown at Diddly Squat Farm, now the subject of a popular long-running TV series.

Hawkstone is the most followed beer in the world on Instagram, and earlier this year it expanded its footprint, bringing its award-winning beer range to thirsty customers across Europe. The lager is also sold in supermarkets.

Drinkers in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, and Finland can get a taste of Hawkstone – along with 4,000 pubs in the UK, including The Crown, where Hot Fuzz tours are still advertised, and memorabilia from the movie are on display on the walls.

Hot Fuzz starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as police officers was released in 2007 and was a box office hit.

It is filmed almost exclusively in Wells, which provides the backdrop for the fictional village of Sandford.

The Crown is about 550 years old and has been run by Adrian Lawrence and his wife since 1993.

The pub said in a statement: “Much of Hot Fuzz was filmed in Wells in 2006, with The Crown being an integral part of the story and featuring in many of the background shots – we are The Crown at Sandford!

“The interior of The Crown was, in fact, The Royal Standard of England, England’s oldest freehouse, in Forty Green, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.”

It added: “In February, 2007, a special ‘premiere’ was held in Wells and we were  thrilled to welcome stars of Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, with director Edgar Wright, back to The Crown for a meal in Anton’s Bistrot.”

Hot Fuzz grossed $80m worldwide, and other stars in the cast included James Bond actor Timothy Dalton, Olivia Colman, and Jim Broadbent.

Hot Fuzz is the second movie in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, also featuring Shaun of the Dead (2004), and The World’s End (2013).

Edgar Wright directed all three films in the trilogy.
