Hickory’s Smokehouse new restaurant now ready to open

Contractors have been converting the former Bystander pub off Wootton Road for the past few months.

The expected opening date, according to the chain, and staff on site, is Friday, August 14.

It is understood that the building work is now complete, and staff are preparing meals for local residents ahead of the opening date.

Managers said the new smokehouse will have two drinks terraces at the front, serving coffees and cocktails in front of TVs showing sports games.

The interior will be set up with a sports bar, a family dining area, and a cinema room for children, including a ‘fro-co creation station’ with frozen yogurt, sweets, popcorn and ice cream.

It will also have a ‘chef’s bar’, with the best seats in the house facing onto the kitchen, so guests can watch their food being prepared.

A garden at the back of the venue will host guests enjoying barbecue food and summer drinks – and retain the Aunt Sally pitch which will have a ‘refresh’ before next season.

The Bystander pub in Besselsleigh Road closed in April and work has been taking place to convert the building ever since.

The exterior now carries the Hickory’s Smokehouse name.

One resident said earlier: “People are expecting the restaurant to open on August 14.

“I personally think the outside of the building looks a bit dull.

“But I think people are looking forward to seeing what it looks like inside – the staff have been giving out vouchers.

“It looks like the building has been extended out the back so they can fit more tables in.”

The chain is known for its authentic Southern-style American barbecue, featuring slow-smoked meats, stacked burgers, and side dishes including fries.

It operates about 38 restaurant sites across the UK, including one in Swindon.
