Headington Cancer Research UK charity shop to close down
The Cancer Research charity shop at 114 London Road is due to shut down this Saturday (June 6).
It is the first of the major charity’s two shops on the same stretch of road to close, with the second to follow later in the year, as the organisation shuts down a number of its shops over the next five years.

The charity, which was officially formed in 2002, announced last October that it would be closing around 90 shops by May this year, with up to 100 more shut by April 2027.

Michelle Mitchell OBE, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said at the time: “I am deeply grateful to our dedicated supporters, volunteers and staff for their role and contribution in beating cancer together.
“Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable.
“A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we will fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.
“This news will be difficult. Our decisions have been taken after serious consideration.
“We’re committed to supporting everyone affected by these changes, and will provide clear information and support throughout the process.”

The charity said rising running costs and changing shopping habits lead chiefs to expect many shops to become financially unsustainable over the next five years.
Cancer Research’s ground floor shop on the south side of London Road is being offered to rent for a new tenant for £5,000 per month.
Its second shop on the road, at 79c London Road, is also being advertised for rent and is expected to close in September this year.
