Harry Potter star Rupert Grint reprising role as Ron Weasley

The actor will reprise his iconic character for a 17-week run on Broadway starting in February 2027 as part of the production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

This marks his first time playing Ron since the film franchise concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.

Mr Grint said: “Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life.

“There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.

“And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.”

He will take over from Tom Felton, who will conclude his months-long stint as Draco Malfoy in the New York City production on January 3, 2027.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said Mr Grint’s casting “creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward.”

Mr Grint’s other credits since the popular Wizarding World franchise include the 2023 film Knock at the Cabin and the Apple TV series Servant, both directed by M Night Shyamalan.

He has also appeared in Snatch, Sick Note, and the BBC One adaptation of The ABC Murders.

The actor made his Broadway debut in 2014 in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play, starring alongside Nathan Lane.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in London in 2016 and has since become a global theatre success, selling more than 14 million tickets across its international productions.

The New York run alone has grossed more than $532 million.

Mr Grint’s return to the Harry Potter universe comes amid ongoing debate over the views of author JK Rowling, who has been criticised for her stance on transgender rights.

In 2020, Ms Rowling published a lengthy essay outlining her position on sex and gender, which was challenged by LGBTQ+ charities including Stonewall.

In 2024, she said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that “there are no trans kids” and opposed the idea that a child can be “born in the wrong body”.

Ms Rowling has since launched the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to support legal cases related to what she describes as “sex-based rights.”

Several Harry Potter cast members, including Mr Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson, have publicly distanced themselves from Ms Rowling’s views and expressed support for the transgender community.

In a 2020 statement to BBC News, Mr Grint said: “I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers.

“Trans women are women.

“Trans men are men.

“We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.”

Not all cast members have criticised Ms Rowling.

Actors including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have defended the author from the criticism she has received.

Mr Grint’s return to the stage comes in the same year as the launch of HBO’s television reboot of Harry Potter, which features a new cast and promises a more detailed adaptation of the original novels.

Tickets for the Broadway run are expected to be in high demand, following increased sales during Mr Felton’s time in the cast.
