Google and Screwfix have teamed up to deliver AI training at Screwfix stores, including the Didcot branch, as part of a nationwide effort to help workers in the construction and home improvement sectors reclaim their time, simplify paperwork and grow their businesses.

An in-store session will take place on Thursday, July 30, from 7am to 3pm, offering tradespeople practical advice on how to make the most of AI tools they already have access to, and how to put them to use in everyday tasks.

Max Britten, managing director of Screwfix UK and Ireland, said: “At Screwfix, we know that time is money for our customers.

“While they’re busy getting the job done, admin and paperwork can quickly pile up.

“That’s why we’re partnering with Google to show how AI can be a practical addition to the toolbox, helping tradespeople save time, work more efficiently and focus on growing their businesses.”

The partnership comes as AI adoption rises in construction, with 86 per cent of workers reporting they already use the technology on the job.

However, according to Google’s research, only 16 per cent consider themselves advanced users.

While 71 per cent of construction professionals are eager to improve their AI skills, more than half don’t know where to turn for guidance.

Kate Alessi, managing director and vice president of Google UK and Ireland, said: “Every tradesperson knows the value of the right tool, and AI is fast becoming another one in their kit.

“Yet, only a small fraction of time-strapped trades are using the technology to unlock a vital productivity boost.

“That’s why we’re excited to partner with Screwfix to put practical AI skills right on the counter, and help more tradespeople use AI to work more effectively and drive their businesses.”

Google’s ‘AI Works’ report suggests that AI could boost productivity for the average UK small business by 20 per cent – equivalent to gaining an extra day’s work each week.

During Thursday’s event at Screwfix Didcot, Google experts will offer ‘AI hacks’ that can be used in the time it takes to pick up supplies, from turning sketches into 3D renderings to converting handwritten notes into client proposals.

Screwfix Rewards customers will also be able to sign up for Google’s free AI Professional Certificate, a self-paced course offering in-depth guidance on using AI to solve real business challenges, from research support to content creation.

The certificate also includes three months’ free access to Google AI Pro, granting users premium tools and resources to help them apply what they’ve learned.
