Football journalist Peter O’Rourke has claimed on X that the Kent side are poised to land the 24-year-old.

This afternoon (Wednesday, June 10), he wrote: “Understand Gillingham are set to win the race for out-of-contract Oxford striker Will Goodwin, beating off competition from Port Vale, Shrewsbury and Colchester.”

The move would end a two-and-a-half-year spell on the books at the Kassam for the forward.

Godwin joined United from Cheltenham Town in January 2024 on what was described at the time as a long-term deal.

He arrived with an impressive scoring run in League One and quickly made his mark for the U’s, netting on just his third appearance in a 2-2 draw against Northampton Town the following month.

However, opportunities became harder to come by following United’s promotion to the Championship.

The former Chester and Stoke City youngster spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Wigan Athletic.

Last season, Goodwin dropped into League Two with a season-long loan at Colchester United.

He made 28 league appearances, scoring four goals as he gained regular minutes in the lower division.

Across his time at Oxford, he has featured intermittently in league and cup competitions, making just 11 competitive appearances and scoring one goal.

The bulk of his senior football over the past two seasons has come during those loan spells away from the club.

United are expected to reshape their attacking options again this summer, and allowing Goodwin to move on as a free agent will free up space in the squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
