Explosion heard in Oxford as grenade found

The noise related to the controlled explosion of a World War Two grenade found near Donnington Bridge.

Police were called shortly after 1pm on August 23, who later called for help from the bomb squad.

Four hours later, the explosion was dealt with “safely”.

A police spokesman said: “Just after 1.15pm today, police were called after an old WW2 grenade was found off Donnington Bridge having been taken out the stream.

“Officers attended and with the assistance of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, this was safely dealt with.

“An explosion sounded just prior to 5pm in the fields just south of the bridge.”
