England’s ‘oldest ironmongers’ closes last shop after 500 years

Oxford High Street shop Gill & Co claimed to be England’s oldest ironmonger, having traded for 486 years through 21 monarchs, 82 Prime Ministers, the English Civil War and Two World Wars.

The business closed its city branch in Wheatsheaf Yard in 2010, and moved operations to its Chipping Norton store which had been running since 2004.

However, Gill’s latest owners, Dawn and Victor Hunt, have now shut down the High Street shop for good.

A heartfelt statement released on their last day trading saw the owners thank its patrons for the years of custom.

They said: “Today is final day and what an adventure it has been since we opened Gills in 2004.

“We are truly grateful for every person who has shopped with us and for the people that have worked with us to make Team Gills.

“We’ve met so many people over the years and helped so many of you with your DIY projects – even the ones who decide to take their bathroom apart at 4.45pm on a Saturday!

“As this chapter comes to an end for us, we are excited for what’s to come – more of our own adventures and spending time with our lovely family. Thank you again for all your support.”

The Oxford store first opened in 1530, off Cornmarket Street, during the reign of Henry VIII.

It moved premises and changed owners a number of times throughout its history, but was always popular for its helpful stock, the staff’s expertise and the business’ valued High Street presence.
