Elderly Oxford person scammed out of £150 by rogue traders

An elderly person was targeted by a male claiming he would remove “black spots” from the driveway.

He sprayed an unknown liquid on the driveway, completing the job within five minutes before charging £150.

A police spokesperson said: “With the warmer weather and longer daylight hours, rogue traders often become more active, using the opportunity to target residents with offers of gardening, roofing, paving and other outdoor maintenance work.”

Rogue traders typically cold-call at properties, offering services that are often unnecessary, poorly done, or incomplete, and charge inflated prices.

Police are reminding the public not to feel pressured into agreeing to work on the doorstep and to never accept services from unexpected cold callers.

They recommend obtaining at least three quotes from reputable companies, seeking recommendations from family, friends, or neighbours, and checking reviews and credentials before agreeing to any work.

Residents are also encouraged to use the Trading Standards-approved Buy With Confidence scheme, which lists vetted businesses that operate legally and fairly.

A police spokesperson said: “Using a Buy With Confidence trader can give you extra reassurance, as businesses on the scheme have undergone checks including trading history, customer service standards and complaint handling.”

If anyone feels pressured or unsure, they are advised to ask the caller to leave and contact a trusted person for support.

In cases where a crime is in progress or someone feels threatened, police advise calling 999 immediately.
