EFL trophy renamed in new sponsorship deal with Jersey Mike’s

The American sub sandwich brand will support the competition for five years until the end of the 2030-31 season.

This makes them the fifth sponsor in the past seven years.

The EFL Trophy is an annual football competition contested by League One and League Two clubs, along with invited under-21 sides from the Premier League.

Last season, Luton Town defeated Stockport County 3-1 in the final at Wembley to secure the trophy for the second time in their history.

Oxford United have finished as runners-up of the competition twice.

They were defeated in the final in the 2015/16 season, losing 3-2 to Barnsley.

The following year, Coventry City came out on top, securing a 2-1 victory over Oxford at Wembley.

Oxford will compete in the competition again this year for the first time since the 2023/24 season, their last campaign in League One.

Trevor Birch, the EFL’s chief executive, said: “The Jersey Mike’s Trophy has an important place in the football calendar.

“It gives players valuable competitive minutes, provides meaningful financial support for clubs and offers supporters in League One and League Two the chance to see their team compete at Wembley and win silverware.”

Oxford’s first match of this year’s tournament is against Exeter City at St James’s Park on Tuesday, October 6.

The U’s have been drawn in a group with League Two sides Exeter and Cheltenham Town, alongside Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-21s.

The final for this season’s competition is scheduled for Sunday, April 11, at Wembley.
