Demolition firm nears zero landfill with 99% recycling rate

Maylarch Environmental said it reached a 99 per cent recycling rate in 2025, diverting nearly all non-hazardous demolition waste from landfill.

Javier Lafuente, demolition manager at Maylarch, said: “It is widely assumed that waste collected from demolition sites is simply sent to landfill.

“This is far from the reality of our operation today where we prioritise fulfilling a circular economy so non-hazardous waste materials can be recycled either immediately or in the long term.

“It surprises a lot of people just how much waste we can recycle from a demolition project.

“We pride ourselves on delivering a sustainable solution to demolition, while securely managing hazardous waste such as asbestos.

“It’s something people should definitely keep in mind when next passing a demolition site, and perhaps even apply how we scrutinise materials onsite to behaviours at home so we can all live in a greener, more sustainable world.”

Maylarch’s recycling rates have risen steadily in recent years, up from 97 per cent in 2023 and 98 per cent in 2024.

Mr Lafuente said: “If necessary, we’ll remove materials by hand so it can be recycled.

“Roof tiles, floorboards, carpets, all timbers, metals, hardcore, plastic and glass can all be reused.

“Of course, what we recycle varies from project to project.

“We work closely with our colleagues based at our waste transfer station too, who will complete the circle by segregating materials which can be recycled.”
