Controversial Oxford cycle path completed after 3 years

The improved cycle route to Meadow Lane and the Thames towpath in East Oxford was completed last week, after planning permission was approved in October 2023.

The new path enters the park through a new access on Meadow Lane to the west of the playing field and across the field in parallel to the southern boundary to meet Cavell Road.

The current entrance from Meadow Lane in the north west of the park has been retained for pedestrians only, and a kissing gate will be provided.

The path was deemed ‘controversial’ while the council sought planning permission for the number of trees that needed to be removed.

Initially 20 trees were supposed to be removed but now only a small number of trees were removed to allow the path to connect to Meadow Lane.

The city council said replacement trees will be provided nearby to compensate for this.

The scheme included the removal of existing fencing and formation of footpath and cycle path, as well as the installation of staggered, timber bollards, timber kissing gate and associated landscaping works and associated signage.

Oxfordshire County Council emphasised the new path will encourage use of the playing fields and promote active travel.

The works for the scheme began this February ahead of bird nesting season.

Major construction for the project began in early spring.

The completion of the path was expected at the end of May, but the path has been completed earlier.
