Climate change campaign group needs new volunteers

The group, which promotes sustainable living and the fight against climate change, needs new recruits to help it stage various events throughout the year, and run its cafe, which is open four days a week in the basement space beneath the county hall museum.

The group said in a statement: “We want to help create a One Planet Abingdon where everyone in the town is focused on living within the earth’s resources, repairing the damage done while enjoying happy, healthy lives and leaving ample space for nature to thrive and flourish.”

Gary Burns, among volunteers running the cafe where delicious homemade cakes, and tea and coffee is served, is a regular at One Planet Abingdon.

He and other volunteers gave a warm welcome to Elizabeth, who was visiting from California.

She said: “I’m visiting Abingdon because my daughter is moving to the area. Everyone has made me feel very welcome.”

Last month the group, which wants to help residents reduce their carbon footprint, hosted Wear It Out, a celebration of sustainable fashion, upcycling and repair culture.

The Guildhall’s Roysse Room was packed with spectators, seeking inspiration on how clothing can be re‑designed, repaired and re‑worn with pride.
