Bus driver hailed a hero after helping save man’s life

Ben Corr, who works for Stagecoach Midlands, was driving his bus when he noticed a man threatening to jump from a bridge.

He stopped the vehicle, calmly spoke with the man, and offered him food in a compassionate effort to help.

Mr Corr also kept his passengers informed throughout the incident.

Mark Whitelocks, managing director of Stagecoach Midlands, said: “I am very proud of everything that Ben was able to do – he really proved himself to be a hero in a hugely challenging situation.

“This was a truly excellent display of his good character.

“He reacted with quick-thinking, calm and professionalism, as well as great use of the observation skills that we train our drivers to have.”

Mr Corr was recognised by Stagecoach Midlands with its Star of the Month award.

He received a certificate and a gift voucher, presented by operations director Kam Gill.

Mr Whitelocks said: “One of our values is that we ‘support our communities’ and this just goes to show the dedication that our colleagues, across the region, have for providing the best possible service to local people in our communities.

“We also say that ‘we’ve got you’ and this was a wonderful example of that ethos in action.”

Stagecoach, founded in 1980, operates a fleet of 8,400 buses and coaches across more than 100 towns and cities in the UK, with nearly 10 per cent of its vehicles now electric.
