Banbury woman found dead in public toilets identified

The woman, in her 40s and from Banbury, was found inside the lavatories close to Banbury Cross in West Bar Street on the morning of Saturday, May 23.

Police set up a cordon around the block of toilets while detectives investigated the circumstances of the death.

The death was previously described by police as “unexpected”, but now since the woman was identified police have sent a file over to the coroner.

The Banbury Cross is a 16-metre neo-Gothic monument.

While it inspires the nursery rhyme “ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,” the current cross was built in 1859 to celebrate the wedding of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter.
