Bake Off star Mary Berry hits back at questions over retirement

The TV legend was a judge on the show during the BBC years between 2010 and 2016 before it left for Channel 4.

She has lived in Henley, in the south of Oxfordshire, with her husband Paul Hunnings, since 2019, having previously lived in London.

Now, the 91-year-old has responded to questions over her potentially retiring, with the TV star showing no desire to step back yet.

Dame Mary was recently speaking at Hay Festival with her former Bake Off co-star host, Mel Giedroyc.

Over the question of retiring, the 91-year-old defiantly said: “I love what I do, so why would I retire?”

The former Bake Off judge also imparted some life advice as she was asked about the key to a happy life.

Daem Mary responded: “To be kind.”

This comes after the 91-year-old said she has found “peace” with her gardening, in quotes from her new book, My Gardening Life, relayed by Radio Times.

“I bring geraniums, pelargoniums, in and out of the greenhouse, and once they’ve flowered, perhaps I’ve had them in the house, I bring them out to recover,” she said.

“I love the greenhouse because it’s somewhere where, when it’s pouring with rain, I want peace and quiet, I come here.”
