Babies cast list for BBC drama series on pregnancy loss
The programme follows Lisa (Cullen) and Stephen (Essiedu), a couple in their 30s whose hope is tested as they endure multiple miscarriages.
A synopsis for the show adds: “The series also stars Charlotte Riley (The Peripheral, Press) and Jack Bannon (Pennyworth, Pulse) as Amanda and Dave – a new couple navigating their own challenges and testing their compatibility.
“Their complex relationship, set against Lisa and Stephen’s ongoing pregnancy journey, begins to expose cracks in Stephen and Dave’s long-standing friendship.”
Babies comes from writer Stefan Golaszewski, who is known for his work on Him & Her, Mum and Marriage.
While the show is not autobiographical, Stefan was inspired to write the series after “a long series of traumas around pregnancy” with him and his wife between 2012 and 2015.
Speaking to the Radio Times, he said: “By now my youngest son was born, and I guess somewhere among the giddy chaos of three young kids I was ready to translate those earlier traumas more explicitly into a story.
“My new series, Babies, starring Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen, arrived.
“While not autobiographical, it is a love story about a couple going through repeated pregnancy loss.
He added: “It’s an attempt to speak truthfully about an experience that remains unspeakable, that is treated as an illness and not grief, and find a way for those who have been through loss to feel less alone.”
