Age UK Oxfordshire backs day of action to challenge ageism
The charity is once again backing Age Without Limits Day, which aims to change the way society views growing older.
Paul Ringer, chief executive of Age UK Oxfordshire, said: “Ageism is often so ingrained in society that we don’t even notice it.
“It shows up in the language we use, the assumptions we make and in everyday interactions.
“This year’s theme, ‘Let’s question ageism’, encourages all of us to stop and think.
“Sometimes it only takes one simple question to challenge a stereotype or see things differently.”
He emphasised that challenging ageism is central to the charity’s mission.
Mr Ringer said: “Challenging ageism is a key part of what we do because it helps create a society where everyone, whatever their age, feels valued, respected and able to live well.”
Age Without Limits Day shines a light on age-related stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, issues that remain widespread but are often overlooked.
Research shows that more than half of people aged 50 and over have experienced age discrimination.
The effects of ageism can be serious, affecting confidence, wellbeing, job prospects, and access to services.
Age UK Oxfordshire is encouraging people across the county to take small but meaningful actions on Age Without Limits Day, such as reflecting on personal attitudes, language, and assumptions related to age.
The charity believes simple questions and self-reflection can help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for people of all ages.
